Staff Attorney Position
About ALWAYS: Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services (ALWAYS) is a non-profit law practice dedicated to opening the doors to justice for vulnerable kids and young adults, and human trafficking survivors. Our free legal services help clients eliminate obstacles to safety, stability, and opportunity. ALWAYS serves human trafficking survivors of any age, and young people up to age 24 who are impacted by abuse, homelessness, and the foster care system.
About the Position: ALWAYS is seeking a mission-oriented Staff Attorney to join our Phoenix-based team. The position provides legal services in areas including family law, immigration, and criminal history repair. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to justice and dignity for all.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide legal services/representation to clients who have experienced trauma;
- Conduct screenings and intakes to assess eligibility for ALWAYS services;
- Provide direct and legal representation in a variety of practice areas including immigration (SIJ, U and T visas, VAWA, DACA), family law (legal decision making, parenting time, child support), victim advocacy (victim representation, orders of protections), and addressing past criminal history (set asides, fingerprint clearance card good card exceptions);
- Provide brief advice/referrals to people who are ineligible for ALWAYS services;
- Advance advocacy priorities by working with stakeholder networks as requested
Required Experience/Skills/License:
- A U.S. law degree (J.D.) and admission to practice law in Arizona
- At least one year of direct representation of clients as an attorney or social service provider with a proven commitment to public interest law
- Commitment to justice and dignity for those we serve
- Work in Phoenix with ability to travel regionally to off-site locations in Maricopa County
- Strong interpersonal, communication and writing skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with colleagues, and a collegial approach to work
Annual Salary: Salary depends on experience. The ALWAYS schedule is a 35-hour work week. Benefits include paid holidays/vacation/sick leave, health insurance, dental insurance, malpractice insurance, and payment of state bar dues.
