Adolescents’ decision making process often seems irrational and self-defeating. The keynote presentation will use current research on reward circuitry and other aspects of brain development, and how adolescents weigh costs and benefits, to help explain the choices they make. Strategies for using the natural cognitive biases that exist during adolesence to assist teens in making decisions that facilitate a healthy transition to adulthood will be described. Also addressed will be coping behaviors that my result from traumatic stress and how to distinguish these from other behaviors that create problems for youth and/or the adults who care for them.
